CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Tamsin returned from her lunchtime dog walk with three worn-out dogs and a definite need for coffee. It was warming up to be a very pleasant “Flaming June”, and she took off her cap and ruffled her hair.

“Perfect timing,” she said as the dogs drank some water before stretching out on their beds with a big sigh, and Emerald drifted into the kitchen, pointing at the kettle, her head tilted questioningly.

“Up the Hills?”

“Yes. It was glorious today - beautifully warm with a stiff breeze. Clouds scudding about the place as they should. We went up Midsummer Hill. Thank you,” she said, handing Emerald two mugs.

“Better get out another two - Feargal and Charity should be here in a moment.”

“Already? I hadn’t realised I was so long.”

“Once you get up the Malvern Hills you step into another world.”

“Just me? Or do you mean everyone?”

“Everyone, I think. It’s a magical place.”

“I’d planned on going up Pinnacle Hill, but Stockwatch showed there were loads of sheep turned out there this week. So we chose Midsummer Hill, didn’t we guys?” she got an answering thud-thud from Quiz’s tail, followed by a theatrical sigh.

“Anyhow they’ll be here soon so we can discuss strategy for tonight!”

“You’re really into this aren’t you? Where’s your yogi avoidance of conflict?”

“I’m on the warpath for those cottagers. Sometimes we have to make a stand.”

An eruption of barking meant that the dogs had heard a car pull up in Pippin Lane.

“You keep going with the coffee and we’ll go and herd them in,” said Tamsin and out she went, surrounded by a forest of waving tails, to greet their visitors.

Charity had brought Muffin, much to Moonbeam’s delight, so the little dogs were dispatched to the garden for their game.

“I feel undressed,” said Feargal, looking at all the livestock, after stealing a long look at Emerald making the coffee.

“Here,” she said, “Have a cat!” and she passed Opal who had been lurking on the counter, “Don’t feel left out.” And cuddling the cat, Feargal followed the others into the living room.

“So what’s the plan?” he asked, once they were all settled down with their drinks, and Moonbeam and Muffin had worn off their first excitement and come to find laps.

“I think we should operate separately,” said Tamsin. “At least you should, Feargal. They’ll know I know Charity, so we would naturally be together a bit. But I think we may learn more if we keep moving. Like, I bet you’d learn more from the Misses Damson than I did, Charity! I’m sure they’ve got more in their heads than they let on. Salt of the earth type, you know? Poorly educated but a solid set of values, I imagine.”

“I’d love to chat to them! I’m sure we have a common history,” Charity nodded vigorously.

“And Emerald could beguile all the menfolk,” said Feargal.

“You make me sound like a lady of the night!” laughed Emerald in mock horror.

Feargal blushed fetchingly. “Oh no, not at all,” he stammered in confusion. “I was thinking of those posh people up at the Manor, or maybe Jake of the veggie patch.
